EP.11 Tony Andrews on A Life In Mining, Miners’ Health and The Lessons Of History

In an industry of big characters, my guest on this episode of Full Production really holds his own. When it comes to working the mines, there’s not a lot Tony Andrews hasn’t done, from re-timbering shafts up to mine foreman, at mines up and down Australia.

In mining, like everything in life, if you don’t learn from the mistakes of the past, you’re destined to repeat them. And that’s why it was so great to have this chance to speak to my old mate, Tony, and get his perspective on the industry, how things have changed through his career, miner’s and their health and relationships, and the future of the industry.

Sadly, Tony’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer, but as you’ll hear, he’s as bold, brassy and entertaining as he always has been – and filled with the wisdom of a lifetime working the mines. Enjoy.

Just some of the stuff we get into includes:

  •      The importance of your health: physical, mental and emotional
  •      A look back at some classic mining history
  •      What past practices have taught us
  •      Reminiscences of some great old characters
  •      What we’ve learnt from some great tragedies
  •      The 4-and-4 versus the 7-and-7 lifestyle
  •      Life as a shift boss
  •      Putting your emotional intelligence to work
  •      Successfully working with young engineers
  •      What excites him about the future of mining
